After Microsoft’s announcement on March 28th, if you’re an administrator managing Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, the deadline for ensuring all users have a properly assigned license is fast approaching. With Microsoft rolling out updates that affect licensing requirements, now is the time to get proactive in understanding how to manage user licenses and avoid potential disruptions. Here’s a breakdown of the changes and the actions you need to take before it’s too late.
- April 30, 2025: Starting on this date, Microsoft will provide detailed license usage reports through the Power Platform Admin Center. This will give you an overview of how many licenses you have, how many have been assigned, and help you identify any gaps. Users who haven’t been assigned licenses will start seeing in-app notifications prompting them to reach out to their administrator for assignment.
- August 30, 2025: By this date, any user who hasn’t been assigned the necessary licenses will be locked out of the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. If you’re not ready by then, your users will experience disruptions, so it’s critical to prepare ahead of time.
What Does This Mean for Admins?
Microsoft is shifting the management of user licenses to a more centralized process. All license assignments for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations applications will now take place through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Starting April 30th, the Power Platform Admin Center will be your best friend. You’ll have access to comprehensive reports that show you exactly how many seats are available and how many are assigned. These reports also provide recommended actions if there are any gaps, helping you stay compliant and ensure users have the access they need.
Administrators now have three powerful tools to help manage license reporting and ensure everything is in order. First, in the Power Platform Admin Center, you can access detailed reports showing how many licenses are assigned and identify any gaps. These reports also include recommendations for fixing issues. Second, the same reporting is integrated into Dynamics Lifecycle Services (LCS), so both customer and implementation partner admins can view the same data and take action. Lastly, in-product reporting via User Security Governance, now in the 10.0.43 public preview, gives even more control and insight into license management. These features help you stay on top of licensing requirements and avoid disruptions as deadlines approach.
